Welcome to the latest edition of CATALYST, a showcase of our collective achievements, bold innovations, and the unwavering spirit that defines the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). This issue highlights many of the ways in which our commitment to improve the human condition and serve the public good reaches far beyond our campus.
While we are incredibly proud to be an anchor institution in downtown Baltimore, the truth is we are — and have always been — a global university.
Last spring, more than 360 international students were enrolled at UMB; they along with our international postdocs, faculty, staff, and global collaborators add richness to our University and contribute a multitude of perspectives and experiences to their fields.
Each year, UMB community members also take part in critical work abroad through various partnerships, capacity-building initiatives, and program offerings. In fact, much of our research is made possible because of global collaborations; more than one-third of UMB research manuscripts involve at least one international co-author. Our global work not only facilitates the exchange of resources and knowledge across borders, but it also exposes UMB community members to new perspectives and approaches for addressing some of the biggest challenges of our time.
For these and many other reasons, global engagement and education represents one of the top priorities outlined in our University’s 2022-2026 strategic plan.
In this issue, you’ll see countless examples of the impact of our global initiatives reaching places as far away as The Gambia, South Korea, the Dominican Republic, and Guam. But, you’ll also learn why our commitment to global engagement does not always equate to work abroad; it is also a commitment to drawing global talent and international partners to Baltimore. UMB thrives because of the diversity of scholars, innovators, and leaders who make up our community both here on campus and in areas all around the world.
To our cherished alumni, partners, and friends: Your continued support drives our mission and makes our global reach possible. I thank you for all you give to our community, and I hope this issue of CATALYST demonstrates the incredible impact of your generosity.
Sincerely,
Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS
