ABOUT CATALYST MAGAZINE
CATALYST magazine is published by the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). Launched in fall 2019, this institutional view piece aspires to be a leading University publication dedicated to presenting engaging and inspirational stories that underscore UMB’s 210-plus-year commitment to catalyzing global advances in health, education, research, social justice, and community service. The magazine informs our ever-expanding community about UMB’s interdisciplinary expertise, our achievements, advances, and aspirations, as well as groundbreaking local and global initiatives.
CATALYST magazine is available in digital format, including a dedicated magazine web portal. Each edition reaches more than 120,000 influential leaders and thinkers in their fields and communities as well as UMB alumni, faculty, staff, and students.
Mission Statement
The objectives of CATALYST magazine are threefold:
- To engender increased awareness of UMB and to build a sense of “University-ness” and loyalty across its seven schools and many constituencies.
- To enhance a culture of philanthropy that is key to educating and supporting future generations of professionals and scholars who will redefine what we know, reframe what we see to achieve, and revolutionize what we believe possible.
- Finally, to inform our ever-expanding community as to University achievements, advances, and aspirations as they relate to real-world health, education, research, and social justice issues, and to present UMB’s unique stories in a compelling and engaging way.

CATALYST magazine welcomes letters to the editor addressing topics covered in the magazine. The editors reserve the right to publish excerpts from such submissions. We also welcome suggestions for future stories.
