The President’s Message 2020

Dear Friends:

I have been part of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) for over two decades and am now honored to be president of this amazing institution. The people who work, teach, and study here represent the best kind of people — those who believe in service to others and want to improve the human condition.

I am proud to celebrate UMB in this second edition of CATALYST magazine, which is online-only this year. The stories that follow tell the incredible story of how UMB is leading in the fight against COVID-19, including the race to find a vaccine. Faculty and staff have been hard at work across the schools on the topic of racial and social justice as well as other important issues at the heart of our mission. And our students have faced the uncertainty of the pandemic head-on, whether they are on campus or online.

CATALYST illustrates UMB’s common mission and the extraordinary work we do — across the state and around the world. Friends of UMB, I hope CATALYST shows you what your friendship enables, what your support enlarges, what your generosity amplifies.
