Dear Friends,
Welcome to the latest edition of CATALYST, a showcase of our collective achievements, innovations, and unwavering spirit that defines the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). This issue highlights remarkable innovations and milestones from across schools and departments, celebrates our Founders Week award winners, and recognizes the invaluable contributions of our students, faculty, and staff.
Students across the seven schools at UMB are well into their studies for the semester and continue to learn about how UMB lives its mission to improve the human condition and serve the public good. Read about the School of Dentistry’s new program to enhance oral health care among elderly Marylanders. Add “Unseen Potential” to your list of podcasts; School of Pharmacy recent graduate Alena Abraham, PharmD, created the podcast dedicated to supporting the blind and visually impaired community. Mary Maldarelli, MD, a fellow in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and 2019 School of Medicine graduate, is using her musical talents to create a therapeutic healing environment.
In this edition, you can read about the Center for Health and Homeland Security at the Francis King Carey School of Law and its work with artificial intelligence. Owonikoko, MD, PhD, the new executive director of the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.
UMB is a dynamic community of scholars, innovators, and leaders, and I’m proud to celebrate them in this edition of CATALYST magazine. Friends of our University, I hope that CATALYST inspires you as you read about the work that your support and generosity make happen every day.
